Temporary limitations imposed on the handling of planes at Sochi Airport.
In a rare turn of events, Sochi Airport in the Krasnodar region of Russia has been subject to temporary restrictions on aircraft operations following a series of drone attacks. The attacks, which resulted in explosions and fires near the airport and other critical infrastructure, triggered air raid alerts and led to temporary closures and restrictions on arrivals and departures to ensure flight safety.
The restrictions, imposed by the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency on August 8, 2025, halted flights and caused significant disruptions, including the redirection of at least 26 flights to alternate airports and affected airport operations with delays and cancellations.
By August 9, the airspace over Sochi was closed twice, continuing the restrictions into the following day. This resulted in dozens of flight delays and at least one cancellation. Flight delays lasted several hours, causing large crowds at the airport.
Airlines affected by the restrictions included Aeroflot, Russia Airlines, and NordStar, which were forced to adjust their schedules and flight plans in response. However, the Federal Air Transport Agency announced that restrictions were lifted after the immediate threat diminished, allowing Sochi Airport to resume normal operations on August 8.
The drone attacks, which targeted the Krasnodar region, created a security threat that directly led to the flight interruptions for major airlines operating there until the situation stabilised and restrictions were lifted. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining flight safety and the need for vigilance against potential security threats.
