Texas AG Ken Paxton's High-Profile Lawsuits Stir Debate and Controversy
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is making headlines again, this time with a series of high-profile lawsuits against prominent companies. Paxton, who is currently seeking a U.S. Senate seat, has targeted manufacturers of baby products, toothpaste, and Covid-19 vaccines, among others, raising concerns and sparking debate.
Paxton's office is investigating baby food manufacturers over heavy metal claims and pursuing toothpaste makers over alleged fluoride dangers to children. In a significant move, he has hired the law firm Keller Postman to sue Johnson & Johnson and Kenvue over Tylenol autism claims, despite a previous case loss due to insufficient evidence. Paxton is also appealing a dismissed case against Pfizer, accusing the company of lying about Covid-19 vaccine efficacy and silencing critics.
Paxton's lawsuits have resulted in substantial settlements for Texas. Private lawyers working on contingency have earned over $500 million, including a $1.4 billion settlement from Meta. However, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce opposes Paxton's Pfizer appeal, warning it could increase risks for businesses during national health emergencies.
Paxton's political ambitions are evident in his targeting of anti-vaccine moms and trial lawyers for support. His lawsuits allow him to claim he is 'protecting our kids' while also providing fees to law firms traditionally supporting Democrats. Zina Bash, a Keller Postman partner and former Paxton staff attorney, has contributed significantly to the Republican National Committee and other GOP causes in 2024.
Paxton's aggressive lawsuit strategy has yielded substantial financial gains for Texas but has also drawn criticism. As he seeks a U.S. Senate seat, his legal actions continue to spark controversy and debate, with businesses and political opponents raising concerns about the potential impacts of his lawsuits.
