The Veterans’ Association Thalhofen held its annual Veterans’ Day and Memorial Day 2024 with a solemn memorial Mass and ceremonies. The event brought together community members to honour fallen soldiers and reflect on the value of peace. Speeches, music, and tributes marked the occasion.

The day began with a memorial Mass at St. Michael’s Parish Church. The Thalhofen Church Choir and the Geisenried Brass Band performed during the service. Father Biju spoke about the need to remember those who died in conflict and to recognise how easily peace can be lost.

After the Mass, attendees gathered at the war memorial. Wreaths were laid in honour of fallen and missing soldiers, followed by a gun salute. Chairman Winfried Angerer led the ceremony, stressing the importance of dialogue, tolerance, and lasting peace.

Deputy Mayor Wolfgang Hannig addressed the crowd, calling Memorial Day a time for listening and understanding the experiences of those who served. Long-standing members of the association received certificates and vouchers in recognition of their dedication.

The association also announced two new appointments. Martin Huber was named deputy chairman, replacing Johann Hief, who had previously held the role.

The Memorial Day served as both a remembrance and a warning. The ceremonies reinforced the message that peace and freedom are essential for a dignified life. The community left with a renewed commitment to preserving the memory of those who sacrificed for their country.
