Booming Defense Industry in Europe: Why It's Now a Hottest Job Market

The job market in the weapons manufacturing sector is increasingly appealing to job seekers.

The European defense industry is on a tear, with an eye-popping 40% increase in job postings compared to pre-Ukraine war levels. And get this - those positions are more attractive than ever.

According to a recent analysis by Indeed, German defense firms are on the hunt for talent, particularly specialists in tech, engineering, and IT - sectors that are currently facing a rough patch in the automobile industry.

France holds the crown for the most defense jobs in Europe, with a whopping 43% of industry-specific postings representing itsJob market. Germany and the UK follow closely with 17% each, leaving the remaining 23% for the rest of Europe.

Defense Boom Amidst Carnage: A Tale of Two Industries

Since the beginning of the Ukraine war in February 2022, indeed, the defense industry has gained in attractiveness. Contrastingly, the auto industry is under immense pressure.

Europe's defense sector is looking to fill vacancies in engineering (mechanical and electrical), IT (software development, IT support, and infrastructure), production and manufacturing, project management, management, office, and administration, and sales roles. Many of these positions carry a technical or production focus.

"In the defense industry, job profiles similar to those in the automobile industry, which is currently under strong pressure, are in demand," said Virginia Sondergeld, Indeed's labor market expert. But with the defense sector being relatively small compared to the auto industry, it's unlikely to absorb all the job losses in the latter.

Nevertheless, Europe's defense powerhouses like Airbus, Hensoldt, Leonardo, Saab, and Thales, are racking up job postings on Indeed.

dig Deeper: Boom Unleashed by Geopolitical Tensions and High-tech Investments

  • The increase in defense job postings in Europe is part of a broader defense expansion fueled by geopolitical tensions and a strategic push for autonomy. Defense companies like Rheinmetall and BAE Systems are expanding their workforce significantly. Rheinmetall plans to grow its staff by nearly 29%, adding up to 9,000 new hires by 2028, while BAE Systems aims to recruit over 5,000 employees in 2025 alone for roles in shipbuilding, cyber, AI, and advanced manufacturing.
  • By 2030, the defense industry is expected to support over 1.46 million direct jobs in Europe, outpacing traditional industries like automobiles. Total defense and aerospace spending in Europe reached €290 billion in 2024, a staggering 10.1% year-on-year increase.
  • This growth in the defense sector is driven by the strategic need for autonomy and the development of cutting-edge technology. The industry is currently focusing on advanced projects such as AI, cyber defense, quantum computing, and next-generation military platforms.

The Defense Industry's Appeal: More Than Just a Job

The defense sector’s growth is due to several factors, including strategic importance, funding stability, contributions to national and European security, and a diverse range of roles. The vital role that the defense industry plays in securing national security makes it more appealing than commercial industries for many job seekers.

Furthermore, while the automobile sector and other traditional industries face stiff competition from technology and renewable energy sectors for talent, the defense industry faces unique challenges such as security clearances, certifications, and special skills. However, the critical shortage of qualified workers caused by decades of underinvestment in defense-related education and training presents an opportunity for the industry to rebuild the talent pipeline and increase its attractiveness through targeted recruitment and innovative workforce development efforts.

  1. The defense sector's rapid growth is evident in Europe, with an increase of 40% in job postings compared to pre-Ukraine war levels, particularly in tech, engineering, and IT sectors, which are facing difficulties in the automobile industry - sectors that are in high demand in the defense industry.
  2. As the defense industry expands, it is not only attracting talent from traditional industries like automobiles but also from various sectors such as finance, aerospace, and business, as Europe's defense powerhouses like Airbus, Hensoldt, Leonardo, Saab, Thales, Rheinmetall, and BAE Systems continue to post job openings on platforms like Indeed.
