A newly completed grave honours Wolfgang Schäuble, Germany’s longest-serving Bundestag member, in his hometown of Offenburg. The memorial, designed by local artist Stefan Strumbel, stands in the historic Waldbach Cemetery. Its striking features include a towering granite headstone and a bronze owl, symbolising the late politician’s wisdom and judgement.
The grave was finished months after Schäuble’s death in December 2023. His family commissioned Strumbel, an Offenburg-based artist, to create the memorial. The headstone, carved from Black Forest granite, reaches over two metres in height and weighs several tons. At its base, an open bronze book displays key moments from Schäuble’s 51-year political career.
In May 2024, the site was vandalised when an unknown individual dug a hole into the gravesite. The damage did not reach the coffin, but the incident provoked nationwide anger. Following the desecration, the grave was carefully replanted and restored to its original state. The bronze owl perched atop the stone holds particular significance. It represents wisdom, foresight, and sound judgement—qualities closely associated with Schäuble’s legacy. The choice of Black Forest granite further ties the memorial to the region where he spent much of his life.
The restored grave now stands as a lasting tribute to Schäuble’s decades of public service. Its imposing design and symbolic details reflect both his political influence and personal roots. The memorial remains a focal point in Offenburg, drawing visitors to honour his memory.
