Thousands Demand Kamatapur State in Massive BTR Rally
Thousands gathered in Kokrajhar, the headquarters of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), for a massive rally organised by the Kamatapur State Demand Council (KSDC). The rally demanded a separate Kamatapur state, with participants waving placards and chanting slogans in support of the cause. The KSDC also warned of intensified agitation if the community's aspirations are not addressed.
The Kamatapur movement seeks recognition, identity, and socio-political rights for the Rajbongshi linguistic community, primarily residing in parts of Assam and West Bengal. The KSDC leaders urged the Central and Assam governments to initiate a tripartite dialogue involving the Centre, the State, and the Kamatapur Liberation Organisation (KLO) to resolve the issue politically. However, the current stance of the Indian and Assam governments regarding talks with the KLO to establish a Kamatapur state remains unclear.
Historically, the Indian government has been reluctant to engage in negotiations with armed groups seeking independence or secession. Nevertheless, there have been instances of dialogue-oriented approaches, particularly when it comes to integrating groups into the political process. The Assam government has previously attempted to foster peace talks with various groups to promote political stability within the state. Initiatives aimed at resolving conflicts in North-East India, focusing on political and economic development, could indirectly impact the KLO's demands.
The KSDC rally in Kokrajhar underscored the community's desire for a separate Kamatapur state. With the KSDC warning of intensified agitation if their demands are not met, the attention now turns to the governments of India and Assam to address these aspirations through dialogue and negotiation.
