Thousands Protest in Assam After Death of Renowned Musician Zubeen Garg
Thousands gathered at Zubeen Kshetra in Assam to mourn the loss of renowned musician and philanthropist Zubeen Garg, who passed away recently. The event turned into a protest as attendees expressed disappointment over the government's restrictions on public mourning and cultural expression.
Garg, a beloved figure in Assam, was known for his versatility, having sung in over 40 languages and composed numerous hits, including 'Ya Ali' from the movie Gangster. His fans paid tribute by lighting candles, singing his songs, and chanting for 'Justice for Zubeen'.
The protest was led by Assam Congress Chief Gaurav Gogoi, who arrived at the venue past the stipulated hour, defying the government's Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) that restricted public visits after 10 PM. Gogoi addressed the crowd, stating that Zubeen Kshetra is a sacred space for Assam and the government should respect, not hinder, public emotions.
The protest highlighted the public's desire to honour Zubeen Garg's memory and express their grief freely. Despite the government's restrictions, people united to celebrate Garg's life and work, sending a strong message of defiance.
