Thousands Protest in Guwahati Against Land Evictions and Corporate Takeover
Thousands of protesters gathered in Guwahati's Chachal ground, demanding proper land pattas (titles) and an immediate halt to evictions. They accused the Assam government of facilitating land transfers to corporate houses under the guise of development projects.
The protesters, led by Subrata Talukdar of the Bhumi Adhikar Joutho Sangram Samiti, accused the government of handing over tribal lands to industrial giants like Adani and Ambani. They chanted 'Maati aamar, adhikar aamar' (Our land, our right) and waved banners and placards.
The protest comes amidst growing concerns over the government's land policies. The government predominantly sells land in indigenous areas to corporate giants like Adani Group and Tata Group for green energy and development projects. Protesters demand accountability, compensation, and justice for nine Dimasa workers who recently died in industrial accidents.
The protesters observed a moment of silence for the deceased workers. Dr. Hiren Gohain, a veteran scholar and thinker, compared the current land exploitation to colonial rule and warned of demographic manipulation. The protesters' demands for land rights and justice highlight the ongoing tensions between indigenous communities and corporate interests in Assam.
