Three Swiss Municipalities Take Over Weisse Arena Ski Area
Flims, Laax, and Falera have joined forces to take over the Weisse Arena ski area. The municipalities are ensuring regional control over the popular winter sports destination through a unique 'sell-and-lease-back' procedure, a first in Switzerland.
The municipalities have established Finanz Infra AG to manage the acquisition. This company, now fully owned by Flims, Laax, and Falera, will lease the infrastructure back to the Weisse Arena Bergbahnen for operation. This move secures long-term regional interests and shields the facilities from foreign investors.
The takeover, expected to be completed by the end of the year, involves the acquisition of cable cars, ski lifts, buildings, and cable networks. The Weisse Arena Bergbahnen will continue to operate the infrastructure as before, ensuring business continuity.
The takeover was approved by voters in Flims, Laax, and Falera, with approval rates of 85.48%, 93.21%, and 93.24% respectively. This decision marks a significant step in protecting and preserving regional interests in the Weisse Arena ski area.
