More Support for Becoming Self-Employed - Thuringia backs part-time founders with expanded startup funding

Thuringia has expanded its funding programmes to help more entrepreneurs turn side businesses into full-time ventures. The changes, announced by the Ministry of Economic Affairs in Erfurt, come as part of a broader push to support small-scale startups across the state. Officials say the move reflects a growing trend of people launching businesses alongside their main jobs.

The updated scheme now allows side-business startups to access government assistance for the first time. Economic Affairs Minister Colette Boos-John stated that the goal is to help these ventures grow into primary income sources. The adjustments follow feedback that existing programmes did not fully account for the needs of part-time entrepreneurs.

By the halfway point of the current funding period, over 1,800 projects had already received financial backing. A total of €41 million, drawn from EU and state funds, has been set aside for startups and business takeovers between 2021 and 2027. Nearly €18 million of that amount remains available for new applicants.

Thuringia sees thousands of business registrations each year, with many founders testing ideas while keeping other jobs. The ministry’s decision aligns with a wider pattern in Germany, where side-business startups have become increasingly common.

The expanded funding will provide clearer pathways for part-time entrepreneurs to scale their ventures. With €18 million still up for grabs, the programme aims to turn more side projects into sustainable businesses. Applications for the updated scheme are open from this year.
