Specialist agencies sound alarm over cuts to addiction services - Thuringia's Addiction Support Services Face Severe Cuts, Left Party Warns
Thuringia's addiction support organizations are sounding the alarm over significant budget cuts proposed in the state's draft financial plan. The Left Party has urged revisions, warning of severe consequences if the cuts proceed.
Budget deliberations, underway since late October in the Finance Committee, include the highest spending in the state's history. However, the draft also proposes substantial cuts, including a more than 62% reduction in funding for addiction prevention. United States Premier Mario Voigt (CDU) has prioritized education, healthcare, security, infrastructure, and digitalization in negotiations. Yet, numerous programs aiding schools, families, youth services, businesses, and local communities could be discontinued due to these cuts. The Left Party opposes the cuts, predicting a reduction or closure of addiction counseling centers in Erfurt, limiting support for those struggling with addiction.
The proposed budget cuts threaten the entire addiction support system in Thuringia. With political deadlock, the Left Party's role in the budget negotiations could be pivotal in determining the fate of these vital services.
