Georg Maier, Thuringia’s SPD leader and interior minister, is pushing for higher basic pensions. His call focuses on East Germany’s baby boomers, who face financial struggles in retirement. The state currently has the country’s lowest average pension, with a basic supplement of just €72.

Maier argues that raising the basic pension is about fairness between East and West. Many in this generation worked their whole lives but earned very little, especially in the 1990s. Their careers were often disrupted after reunification, leaving them dependent on the basic pension system.

He stresses that these workers deserve better after decades of contributions. According to Maier, increasing the supplement is both justified and financially feasible. His proposal aims to address long-standing inequalities in pension payments across Germany.

Thuringia’s pensioners receive the smallest average payments in the country. A higher basic supplement could ease financial pressure for East Germany’s baby boomers. Maier’s plan now awaits further discussion on funding and implementation.
