THW Bavaria Marks 75 Years of Service as Ukraine Crisis Highlights Its Relevance
The Technisches Hilfswerk (THW) in Bavaria marks its 75th anniversary this year. Established on August 22, 1950, to safeguard the population from post-World War II hazards, the THW has evolved and expanded its roles significantly over the decades. Initially focused on war aftermath and civil defense, the THW's responsibilities grew following Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014, with expanded competencies in emergency supply and restoration. Today, with Russia's attack on Ukraine, the THW's civil defense capabilities have taken on renewed significance. The THW in Bavaria, comprising around 16,000 volunteers, has been at the forefront of numerous relief efforts. Last year, they dedicated countless hours to assist in the flood disaster caused by low-pressure system 'Orinoco' in southern Bavaria. In 2023, they supported on-site efforts in Turkey following a severe earthquake and rebuilt infrastructure in Slovenia after heavy rainfall flooding. The THW has procured aid goods worth over 138 million euros for Ukraine on behalf of the federal government. Their volunteers have also been instrumental in combating flood disasters, such as the one in the Ahr Valley in 2021. As the THW in Bavaria celebrates its 75th anniversary, it reflects on its rich history of service and looks ahead to continue protecting and assisting the population in various crises, both at home and abroad.
