Tikhanovskaya and Navalnaya Honored for Defending Human Rights in Europe
Svetlana Tikhanovskaya and Yulia Navalnaya have been jointly awarded the Menschen in Europa prize for their work in defending human rights. The ceremony took place in Passau, Germany, as part of an annual programme recognising contributions to democracy and freedom. Both women dedicated their recognition to those fighting for change in their home countries.
The Menschen in Europa programme honours individuals who have advanced democratic values and human rights. This year’s award went to two prominent figures: Tikhanovskaya, a leading voice in Belarus’s opposition, and Navalnaya, wife of imprisoned Russian activist Alexei Navalny.
The award places Tikhanovskaya and Navalnaya among a growing list of honourees recognised for their commitment to human rights. Their joint recognition underscores the ongoing struggles for democracy in both Belarus and Russia. The ceremony closed with a call to continue supporting those working for political freedom in the region.
