Tim Cook's China visit signals Apple's enduring commitment amid shifting dynamics
Apple CEO Tim Cook arrived in China this week for his first visit of 2026. The trip began ahead of the China Development Forum and included meetings with top officials. On Friday, he met with Chinese Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao in Beijing for discussions on business ties.
Cook's tour started with a stop at an Apple Store in Chengdu. He later visited the Sanlitun store in Beijing, where he spoke with customers and staff. Between official engagements, he was seen buying coffee at a Starbucks in the capital.
At the Ministry of Commerce, Wang greeted Cook warmly, and the two shook hands. Wang noted that their past meetings had always been practical and productive. Cook also visited the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), where he reaffirmed Apple's long-term commitment to the Chinese market. During the talks, Cook highlighted China's role in Apple's supply chain and its importance as a key market. He later posted on Weibo about two users whose lives were improved by Apple Watch health features. However, no new investment plans or concrete measures from Apple have been announced since the March 2026 meeting.
The visit comes as Apple continues to emphasise its relationship with China. Cook's engagements included store visits, customer interactions, and high-level talks. As of now, no specific follow-up actions from the discussions have been reported.
