Time will prove Akufo-Addo's legacy - NAPO rejects claim of worst president

Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, known as NAPO, has strongly defended the legacy of former Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Speaking as the 2024 vice-presidential candidate, he dismissed criticism of Akufo-Addo’s leadership as politically driven and lacking fairness. NAPO urged the public to wait for history’s verdict instead.

NAPO, who served as Energy Minister under Akufo-Addo, highlighted the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy as a major achievement. He praised its vision and execution, giving it full marks for transforming education in Ghana.

He also addressed criticism over the lithium agreement, arguing that Akufo-Addo was unfairly blamed for securing better royalty terms. According to NAPO, the deal was a strategic move to benefit the country’s future. On the COVID-19 response, NAPO recalled international recognition for Ghana’s handling of the crisis. He insisted the government’s actions were decisive and effective, despite later scrutiny. Rejecting claims that Akufo-Addo would be remembered as Ghana’s worst president, NAPO called such narratives biased. He stressed that only time would reveal the true impact of Akufo-Addo’s time in office.

NAPO’s defence comes as he campaigns for the 2024 elections, having been nominated by Akufo-Addo himself. His remarks aim to reshape public perception of the former president’s record. The debate over Akufo-Addo’s legacy is likely to continue as the election approaches.
