Dierfeld records 100 percent voter turnout - Tiny German Village Achieves Perfect Voter Turnout in State Election
Dierfeld, the smallest municipality in Rhineland-Palatinate, has made headlines after achieving full voter turnout in the recent state election. With just 15 residents and eight eligible voters, every ballot counted—literally. The village, known for its historic 16th-century estate, is now also planning a 15-hectare solar farm to support renewable energy and fund local charitable projects.
Dierfeld's election process was far from ordinary. To protect voter secrecy, the village combined with neighbouring Manderscheid to form a single polling district. This move ensured the ballot box met the minimum requirement of 30 votes. Mayor Roderich von Greve-Dierfeld personally collected and mailed the postal ballots, as all eight eligible residents—either family members or estate employees—cast their votes.
The village's tight-knit community is centred around a historic estate, complete with its own chapel and cemetery. Dierfeld's unique setup mirrors that of Hamm, another tiny municipality of 16 people, where the polling station was once set up in the former mayor's home. Beyond elections, Dierfeld is looking ahead. Plans for a 15-hectare solar farm aim to boost renewable energy while funding charitable initiatives. The project reflects the village's commitment to sustainability, despite its small size. Rhineland-Palatinate has around 2,300 municipalities, with roughly 140 housing fewer than 100 residents. Yet Dierfeld's full voter participation stands out as a rare example of civic engagement in such a close-knit setting.
Dierfeld's 100% voter turnout highlights the efficiency of small-scale democracy. The village's upcoming solar farm will further its role in renewable energy while supporting local causes. For now, its historic charm and community spirit remain as strong as ever.
