Tiny German Village Builds Playground and Sports Hub with €2,500 Grant
Gerstengrund, a tiny village in Thuringia's Rhön region, has received a boost for its community spirit. Justice Minister Beate Meißner handed over €2,500 in lottery funds to the newly formed Sport- und Kulturverein Gerstengrund. The money will help build a playground and sports facilities for the village's few dozen residents.
The Sport- und Kulturverein Gerstengrund was set up in October 2024 with around 20 members. Its goal is to bring people together through shared activities and social events. The club is actively looking for new members and supporters, offering contact details for those interested in joining.
The €2,500 grant will fund a playground featuring a treehouse, a small sports field, and a volleyball court. Additional plans include seating areas and a barbecue spot, all designed by master carpenter Matthias Wald. Volunteers from the village are leading the construction work.
During the visit, Minister Meißner praised the high level of engagement in Gerstengrund. She highlighted the community's determination to create a welcoming space for all. Benedikt Bott was singled out for his outstanding commitment to the project.
The event ended with homemade baked treats prepared by the village women. Their contribution underscored the close-knit nature of Gerstengrund's residents. Mayor Sascha Völkner also commended the association's efforts and the strong sense of unity in the village.
The new playground and sports area will provide a gathering place for Gerstengrund's small but active community. With ongoing volunteer work and financial support, the project aims to strengthen local ties. The club continues to welcome new members and supporters to help expand its activities.
