Tokayev Met with Members of the Japan-Kazakhstan Parliamentary Friendship League
Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has held high-level talks in Japan to deepen ties between the two nations. Meetings with Emperor Naruhito and lawmakers focused on trade, investment, and cooperation in key sectors like healthcare and water management. The visit also highlighted cultural exchanges and joint projects already underway.
Tokayev began his engagements by meeting members of the Japan-Kazakhstan Parliamentary Friendship League, led by Toshiaki Endo. He praised the league’s role in strengthening bilateral relations, calling it a vital mechanism for collaboration. Both sides emphasised the importance of inter-parliamentary dialogue in expanding economic and political ties.
Trade between the two countries has grown significantly, reaching $2 billion in 2024. Japan remains one of Kazakhstan’s largest investors, accounting for over 70% of its total trade with Central Asia. Joint projects now span transport, logistics, energy, and agriculture, with both nations committed to further development. During talks with Emperor Naruhito, Tokayev explored ways to expand cooperation in healthcare and water management. The leaders also discussed cultural and humanitarian exchanges, including education, science, and tourism. Kazakhstan and Japan have previously collaborated on events like the World Expo in Osaka, where they marked the 180th anniversary of poet Abai Kunanbayev’s birth. The Central Asia–Japan Summit remains a key platform for regional cooperation. Tokayev is set to meet Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to address pressing issues and deepen political dialogue. Both countries share positions on global challenges, including peacekeeping and nuclear disarmament, reinforcing their long-standing partnership.
Tokayev expressed confidence in the future of Kazakhstan-Japan relations, citing strong economic, cultural, and humanitarian ties. The planned summit with Prime Minister Takaichi will further solidify cooperation in trade, technology, and regional stability. Both nations continue to build on decades of collaboration across multiple sectors.
