Tony Dokoupil named sole anchor of *CBS Evening News* in major shakeup
CBS News is set to announce Tony Dokoupil as the new solo anchor of CBS Evening News this week. The move follows the departure of current anchors John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois later this month. Dokoupil, who co-hosts CBS Mornings, has signed a new deal to take over the evening programme.
The change comes under the leadership of Bari Weiss, the network’s editor-in-chief since October 2025. Her appointment by Paramount CEO David Ellison marked a shift in direction for the news division.
The CBS Evening News will return to a single-anchor format after a year with Dickerson and DuBois sharing the role. Dokoupil’s promotion follows months of speculation about the position, with Weiss reportedly considering external candidates like Bret Baier and Anderson Cooper.
Dokoupil faced criticism last year for a combative interview with author Ta-Nehisi Coates. Despite the backlash, he retained support from Shari Redstone and the Free Press. Two CBS executives who managed the fallout—Wendy McMahon and Adrienne Roark—have since left the network.
Weiss, known for her editorial decisions, appears to have backed Dokoupil’s experience and profile. His transition from morning to evening news reflects CBS’s effort to refresh its flagship broadcast.
With Dokoupil’s appointment, CBS News completes a major reshuffle of its evening programme. The network now looks to stabilise its lineup under Weiss’s leadership. The changes take effect as Dickerson and DuBois exit later this month.
