"Total Nonsense": City Council Accuses Mayor Candidate of 'Cluelessness' Regarding S7 Expansion

Plans for the €433 million S-Bahn extension to Geretsried have sparked a heated debate between local politicians. City Councilor Richard Kugler (Wolfratshausen List) and FDP mayoral candidate Dr. Patrick Lechner are at odds over the project’s necessity and financial sense. While Kugler acknowledges the plans are now finalised, Lechner insists the scheme is wasteful and environmentally damaging.

The expansion of the S-Bahn station at Hackerbrücke was initially proposed by Munich’s Baureferat. However, the Geretsried extension has drawn sharp criticism. Dr. Patrick Lechner argues the project is economically unviable and involves irresponsible land sealing. He instead advocates for alternatives like electric buses or the Ottobahn system.

Richard Kugler dismissed Lechner’s suggestions as 'utter nonsense', accusing him of 'cluelessness'. Kugler confirmed that a cut-and-cover tunnel will be built to resolve the level crossing issue, with costs shared between the district and neighbouring towns. He also admitted that opposing the project at this stage is pointless, as the plans are already set.

Kugler further questioned the project’s cost-benefit analysis, calling the new stations’ locations 'in the middle of nowhere'. He clarified that Wolfratshausen neither initiated the extension nor holds any decision-making power in the process. Alternative transport solutions, such as electric buses or the Ottobahn, were rejected by Kugler, who stated that cities would have to bear the full cost alone.

The S-Bahn extension to Geretsried will proceed despite objections over its economic and environmental impact. The €433 million project includes a new tunnel, with funding shared among local authorities. Critics, however, remain unconvinced of its long-term benefits.
