The colossal An-225 Mriya, once the world's largest aircraft, met its unfortunate end during the Russian invasion at Hostomel Airport in Ukraine on February 27, 2022. This iconic symbol of Ukrainian engineering and innovation now stands as a casualty of the conflict, with no plans for its rebuilding.
The An-225 Mriya, a product of the Ukrainian aircraft manufacturer Antonov, was originally designed in the 1980s for transporting the Soviet space shuttle Buran. With a length of 84 meters and a record wingspan of 88.4 meters, it held the title of the largest aircraft in the world at the time.
The aircraft, which expanded Antonov's fleet in 2001, suffered near-total destruction during the Russian attack on Hostomel Airport. The exhibition showcases numerous images, some in color and some in black and white, of the An-225 Mriya, including those depicting its tragic final moments.
While the An-225 Mriya lies in ruins, another Antonov model, the An-124 Ruslan, has undergone modernization and relocation efforts. One of the An-124-100 aircraft was successfully relocated to Germany after undergoing a modernization program to replace Russian components with Ukrainian and Western parts [1][2][3].
The exhibition, dedicated to the six-engined An-225 Mriya, serves as a poignant reminder of Ukraine's aviation history and heritage. It stands as a testament to the ingenuity and ambition that once drove the Antonov company, and to the loss that the world has suffered with the destruction of the An-225 Mriya.
