Woman Falls from Fourth Floor - 36-Year-Old in Court - Trial begins for man accused of leaving ex-partner paralysed after violent fall
A 36-year-old man is standing trial for repeatedly assaulting his former partner, leaving her permanently paralysed after a fall from a fourth-floor window. The woman, now 35, suffered a severed spinal cord and severe internal injuries in the October 2022 incident. The trial opened with the defendant in custody and will continue on March 12.
The couple's relationship turned violent early on. The woman testified that the first severe attack happened after just one year together. She described verbal abuse, physical restraint, and a facial injury during that assault.
Between April 2021 and October 2022, prosecutors allege the man committed 16 acts of violence against her. These include an incident where he forced her into a bathtub and squeezed her jaw until it caused pain. Days before the fall, he reportedly destroyed her bedroom furniture and smashed perfume bottles in a jealous rage.
On October 21, 2022, the woman confronted him about a half-tablet of Viagra found in her apartment. She sat on the windowsill, holding the pills, and threatened to drop them. The prosecution claims the man lunged at her, causing her to lose balance and fall.
The defendant admits to four violent incidents but denies responsibility for the fall. He argues that the woman climbed onto the windowsill herself.
The trial centres on five key charges, including grievous bodily harm, with 11 additional allegations under scrutiny. The woman remains paraplegic, unable to walk after the fall. The court will reconvene next month to hear further evidence.
