Tripura and Nagaland gear up for crucial by-elections on April 9
By-elections for two Assembly seats—Dharmanagar in Tripura and Koridang in Nagaland—have been announced by the Election Commission of India. Voting will take place on April 9, with results expected on May 4. Both contests follow the deaths of sitting legislators who had long political careers in their respective states.
The Dharmanagar by-election was triggered by the passing of Biswa Bandhu Sen, a four-time MLA and former Assembly Speaker. Sen had represented the constituency twice for Congress before switching to the BJP, winning again in 2018 and 2023. The Left Front, led by CPI-M, has fielded Amitabha Datta, a former MLA, as its candidate for the seat.
In Nagaland, the Koridang bypoll follows the death of Imkong L Imchen, a veteran leader who served five terms in the Assembly. Imchen first won as an Independent before later representing the Naga People's Front and the BJP. The constituency now awaits nominations, though candidate details have yet to be officially confirmed. Polling officials have set April 9 as the date for both elections, with counting scheduled for May 4. The outcomes will determine new representatives for the vacant seats in each state's legislature.
The by-elections will fill vacancies left by two experienced politicians whose careers spanned multiple parties and decades.
