Honduras: Trump Calls for Election of Right-Leaning Presidential Candidate - Trump backs Honduran right-wing candidate amid election tensions with Venezuela
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly backed right-wing candidate Nasry Asfura in Honduras’s upcoming presidential election. His endorsement comes amid rising tensions in the region, with U.S. forces actively monitoring the vote. Trump also warned against alleged interference by Venezuela’s leftist leader, Nicolás Maduro, while dismissing other candidates as untrustworthy allies for American interests.
Trump’s support for Asfura was announced in a statement where he described the Honduran politician as 'the only true friend of freedom in Honduras'. He added that cooperation with Asfura would be possible, unlike with his left-wing rival, Xiomara Castro’s running mate Rixi Moncada, whom he labelled alongside 'the communists' as incompatible partners. Asfura responded by thanking Trump and reinforcing his stance as a defender of conservative values.
Asfura now enters the final stretch of the campaign with Trump’s high-profile endorsement. The U.S. military continues to monitor the election, particularly Moncada’s left-wing party, Libre, amid fears of external influence. With tensions high and security operations ongoing, the outcome of Honduras’s vote could further shape regional relations between the U.S. and Venezuela.
