US Secretary of Defense Hegseth Visits Border Between North and South Korea - Trump Meets South Korean President, Reiterates Commitment to Easing Tensions
US President Donald Trump met with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung on the sidelines of the APEC summit in South Korea. During their meeting, Trump expressed his commitment to easing tensions between North Korea and South Korea.
This meeting comes after Trump became the first sitting US president to set foot on North Korean soil in 2019, during his first term (2017–2021). He met with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un at the time, marking a historic moment in US-North Korea relations.
The current US Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, recently visited the North-South Korea border during a trip to South Korea. He discussed joint defense strategies with South Korean officials. This visit follows a similar trip by then-US Defense Secretary James Mattis in October 2017, who also visited the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) along the border.
Despite the recent meeting between Trump and Lee Jae-myung, a meeting between Trump and Kim Jong-un did not take place. However, Trump's commitment to easing tensions between the two Koreas remains clear.
