Trump pardons Gobble and Waddle in 78th Thanksgiving turkey tradition
President Donald Trump will pardon two turkeys, named Gobble and Waddle, in the 78th annual National Thanksgiving Turkey Presentation. The ceremony, set for Tuesday, continues a long-standing White House tradition. Both birds will be spared and later sent to a university farm for retirement.
The tradition of turkey pardons traces back to Abraham Lincoln’s presidency. However, it was John F. Kennedy who first officially pardoned a turkey in 1963. The practice faded for years until George H.W. Bush revived it in 1989, turning it into a yearly event.
The pardoned turkeys will spend their remaining days at a university facility. The ceremony reinforces a tradition that has lasted for decades, blending humour with a symbolic act of mercy. This year’s event marks the 78th time a turkey has been presented to the president.
