Are Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin Digging a Joint Tunnel? - Trump Revives Cold War 'Peace Bridge' Idea: Underwater Tunnel to Russia

A decades-old idea of a 'peace bridge' between Russia and Alaska has resurfaced, with a Russian envoy proposing an underwater tunnel and US President Joe Biden showing interest. The concept, first mooted during the Cold War era, gained traction in recent years, with Elon Musk's Boring Company even considered for the project.

The proposal for a tunnel between Alaska and Russia was initially floated by Kirill Dmitrijew, a Russian envoy, on an online service. Biden, who had Elon Musk serving as an advisor after his inauguration, later asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for his opinion on the idea. Musk, who had previously supported Biden's campaign and served at a government department for state efficiency until May 2021, could potentially be involved in the project through his company, The Boring Company.

The Boring Company aims to revolutionize urban traffic through tunnel construction, and Dmitrijew suggested that they could build the tunnel in less than eight years. However, Zelensky was not in favor of the idea, expressing his displeasure in his response to Biden. In 2025, Dmitriev renewed the proposal, calling it a 'Peace Bridge'. Biden, during a White House press conference, showed interest in the idea, suggesting it could improve relations between the two countries.

The 'peace bridge' tunnel idea, first proposed during the Cold War, has seen renewed interest in recent years. With Elon Musk's company potentially involved and US President Joe Biden expressing support, the project could potentially improve relations between Russia and the US. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's disapproval of the idea may pose a hurdle.
