Trump rules out 2028 presidential run, citing term limits

Former President Donald Trump has clarified that he will not be running for president again in 2028 due to constitutional limits on presidential terms. Despite expressing regret, he has ruled out other options for a return to the White House. Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance is focused on the 2026 midterms and has plans to discuss his own potential 2028 presidential run with Trump after these elections.

Trump's acknowledgment comes after months of speculation about a potential 2028 run. He has previously hinted at the possibility, even displaying 'Trump 2028' hats on his Oval Office desk during a meeting with Democratic leaders in September 2021. However, he has since clarified that the U.S. Constitution, which limits presidents to two terms, prevents him from running again. He has also ruled out running as vice president, stating 'I would not do it. It would not be right.'

Meanwhile, JD Vance, who was elected as vice president in 2024, is focused on the upcoming 2026 midterm elections. He wants the Republican Party to win to prevent Democrats from 'screwing up' Trump's accomplishments. After the midterms, Vance plans to discuss his potential 2028 presidential run with Trump. The Trump Organization's online merchandise store has also been selling 'Trump 2028' hats since April 2022, suggesting continued interest in a potential Trump candidacy. However, Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., has downplayed the possibility, claiming it was just 'trolling' Democrats.

While Trump has clarified that he will not be running for president again in 2028, the political landscape remains dynamic. JD Vance's plans for a potential 2028 run and the ongoing interest in a Trump candidacy suggest that the next presidential election is already on the minds of many. The outcome of the 2026 midterm elections may provide further clarity on the potential candidates and their strategies for the 2028 race.
