Trump, Xi Meet in Busan: Tariffs Rollback, Trade Understandings, and a 'Fantastic New Beginning'

In a significant development, US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Busan, South Korea, describing it as 'an amazing meeting' that marked 'a fantastic new beginning' in US-China relations. The two leaders announced a series of economic and trade understandings, including a 10% reduction in US tariffs on Chinese goods. Meanwhile, Sushant Sareen, a Senior Fellow associated with the United Service Institution of India (USI), argued that India should focus on fixing its fundamentals before aspiring to global dominance.

The meeting between Trump and Xi resulted in several agreements. Notably, Trump confirmed the rollback of tariffs and China's resumption of soybean purchases, describing it as 'a big win for our farmers'. Additionally, China agreed to maintain exports of rare earth minerals under a one-year arrangement expected to be extended. Looking ahead, Trump announced plans to visit China in April, with Xi expected to visit the United States later in the year.

In response to the US-China meeting, security analyst Sushant Sareen suggested that the US-China 'G2' moment should serve as a wake-up call for India. Sareen criticized India's dependence on foreign technology and its slow pace of reform, arguing that India should focus on fixing its fundamentals before aspiring to global dominance. Interestingly, 'Taiwan' never came up in the discussions between Trump and Xi.

The Trump-Xi meeting in Busan has led to several economic and trade understandings, with both leaders expressing optimism about the future of US-China relations. Meanwhile, Indian analyst Sushant Sareen has urged India to focus on its own strengths and reforms, rather than aspiring to global dominance. As the US and China continue to engage, India will be watching closely to determine its own path forward.
