Debate over Shift of Meeting Between Trump and Xi - Trump-Xi summit in doubt after Strait of Hormuz demand shakes trade talks
A planned meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping may no longer take place as scheduled. The potential delay follows Trump's call for Beijing's support in securing the Strait of Hormuz before the summit. Officials have since offered conflicting explanations for the change in plans.
Over the weekend, Trump suggested in a Financial Times interview that the meeting could be postponed. He tied the decision to China's role in stabilising the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route. His remarks cast uncertainty over ongoing trade talks between the two nations.
In Paris, U.S. and Chinese trade delegations had recently wrapped up discussions described as 'in-depth, open, and constructive.' Both sides reportedly reached preliminary agreements on several issues. However, the president's comments shifted focus away from these negotiations. White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt confirmed the possibility of a delay. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, though, disputed Trump's reasoning. He claimed logistical challenges and current circumstances—not geopolitical demands—were behind the potential postponement.
The meeting's future remains unclear as conflicting statements emerge from Washington. If delayed, it would mark another setback in U.S.-China relations, with trade talks already facing pressure. Beijing's response to the situation has not yet been made public.
