The Trump administration faces a legal challenge over its handling of university funding, while the University of California (UC) is in settlement talks following a $1.2 billion fine and research funding freeze due to alleged antisemitism on campus.

Unions and other groups have filed a lawsuit against the administration, arguing that funding cuts are being used to silence opposing viewpoints at UC, violating the Constitution and federal law. The administration, however, has launched investigations into dozens of universities, including UC, for allegedly failing to end racial preferences, which they claim violates civil rights law.

The UC system is not a party to the lawsuit but is in talks with the administration following a $1.2 billion fine and frozen research funding. This action comes after the administration demanded that UCLA comply with its views on gender identity and establish a process to prevent foreign students from engaging in anti-American, anti-Western, or antisemitic 'disruptions or harassment'.

A federal judge, Rita Lin, has granted a preliminary injunction sought by the unions and other groups, temporarily halting the administration's actions. UC President James B. Milliken has warned that the size of the UCLA fine could devastate the entire UC business.

The Trump administration's handling of university funding, particularly in relation to UC, remains a contentious issue. While the administration investigates universities for racial preferences and discrimination, a lawsuit challenges its use of funding cuts to silence opposing viewpoints. The UC system, currently in settlement talks, faces the impact of a significant fine and frozen research funding.
