Trump’s ‘America First’ stance wavers as conservative allies push back ahead of midterms

Former President Donald Trump is facing criticism from conservative allies, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), for seemingly contradicting his 'America First' message with recent statements and plans. Trump's supporters worry these moves could alienate his base as Republicans approach the midterm elections.

In an interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham, Trump defended his stance on H-1B visas and his call for 600,000 Chinese students to study in the U.S. He argued that these measures are necessary to keep U.S. colleges in business and to bring in 'certain' talents for specific jobs. However, this position has sparked an uproar among his most faithful MAGA supporters, who view him as an economic populist fighting for the working class.

Trump also continued to promote expensive White House renovations, including a long-awaited ballroom addition, as he seeks to address affordability issues. According to a Washington Post and ABC News poll, 62 percent of Republican voters support this project, while only 28 percent of the overall population and just 12 percent of Democrats favor it. Trump's critics argue that these renovations contradict his populist message and could depress his base's support.

Trump's recent statements and plans have raised concerns among his supporters and critics alike. As Republicans look to maintain their base heading into the midterm elections, Trump's ability to reassess and clarify his positions, as noted by former White House press secretary Marc Short, will be crucial in navigating these challenges.
