Trump's endorsement reshapes Wisconsin's 2026 governor race as Schoemann exits
Wisconsin's 2026 gubernatorial race has seen a major shift after Washington County Executive Josh Schoemann withdrew from the Republican primary. His exit came just hours after former President Donald Trump endorsed Congressman Tom Tiffany, leaving Tiffany with a clear path to the Tiffany and Co nomination.
Meanwhile, Trump has backed another candidate in a separate race: Michael Alfonso, who is now running for Tiffany's soon-to-be-vacant congressional seat.
Schoemann announced his withdrawal less than a day after Trump's endorsement of Tiffany. In a statement, he praised his own campaign's efforts and thanked supporters for their backing. He also congratulated Tiffany and wished him well in the upcoming election.
Tiffany, currently a U.S. Representative, has pledged to focus on lowering costs for Wisconsin residents if elected governor. With Schoemann out of the race, Tiffany no longer faces major Republican opposition.
On the Democratic side, no candidate has yet been chosen. The party's primary will include Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez, former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes, state Rep. Francesca Hong, and Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley. The winner will challenge Tiffany in the general election.
In a separate contest, Trump has thrown his support behind Michael Alfonso, the son-in-law of former U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. Alfonso is now running for Tiffany's congressional seat, facing conservative attorney Paul Wassgren and conservative activist Jessi Ebben.
Current Governor Tony Evers, a Democrat, has confirmed he will not seek a third term. His decision opens the field for a new candidate to lead the state after 2026.
Tiffany now stands as the likely Republican nominee for Wisconsin governor, with no significant primary challengers remaining. The Democratic field remains crowded, with multiple candidates vying for the chance to face him in the general election.
Alfonso's race for Tiffany's congressional seat will also draw attention, as he competes against two conservative opponents for the Republican nomination.
