Trump's Mixed Messages on China, India's Russian Oil Purchases Spark Debate
Former US President Donald Trump has made contradictory statements regarding China's and India's purchases of Russian oil. Meanwhile, India has reaffirmed its energy policy, prioritizing national interests and market conditions.
Trump recently acknowledged that the US has limited influence over China's Russian oil imports, stating that it 'takes care of a big part of China'. However, he has continued to take credit for India's reduced Russian oil purchases, despite a 25% penalty tariff remaining in place. Trump praised India for being 'very good' on reducing imports, but did not mention the tariffs.
Former Indian Foreign Secretary Kanwal Sibal has criticized Trump's approach. He argued that India should explore ways to continue buying Russian oil, rather than rushing to increase US oil purchases due to Trump's one-sided pressure. Sibal also pointed out that Trump has not addressed Russia's significant oil purchases with Xi Jinping, despite China receiving pipeline supplies and buying more than India.
Trump's comments on China's and India's Russian oil purchases have sparked debate. India, however, maintains its energy policy, focusing on national interests and market conditions. The US and India have yet to reach a consensus on this issue.
