President Donald Trump has made bold claims about the U.S. economy, including significant tariff revenues and potential dividends for citizens. Meanwhile, a lawsuit challenges the legality of his tariff policies, and critics question their impact on inflation and overall economic health.

Trump asserted that the U.S. was collecting 'trillions of dollars' in tariffs, a figure that has indeed increased since his first term. In the first half of 2025 alone, $364.6 billion was collected, a substantial rise from previous years. However, it's important to note that tariffs are paid by domestic importers, not foreign countries, as Trump often claimed.

The president also boasted about a 'record stock market' and 'record investment' in plants and factories. While the market has seen growth, it's largely driven by AI hype rather than overall business health. Additionally, while there has been more investment, it hasn't been a sudden rush of new facilities. One notable development is the lawsuit filed by the US toy company Learning Resources, represented by entrepreneur Woldenberg, challenging the legality of Trump's tariffs in the Supreme Court.

Trump further claimed that the U.S. would soon pay down its $38 trillion debt and provide a 'dividend of at least $2000 a person'. However, economists argue that such a dividend is unlikely for everyone, especially those without high incomes, and a president cannot unilaterally authorize such a payment.

Despite Trump's optimistic claims, many Americans are feeling the pressure of growing inflation, particularly in areas like food, housing, and healthcare. The impact of his tariff policies on the economy remains a contentious issue, with critics questioning their effectiveness and legality. As the lawsuit against his tariffs progresses, the Supreme Court may soon provide clarity on the matter.
