Sener Koltuk, a renowned figure in Turkish aviation history, passed away on June 12, 2008, at the age of 57, following a heart attack. Born in Istanbul in 1951, Koltuk's passion for aviation was evident from an early age.

After completing his high school education in Istanbul, Koltuk pursued his dream by studying at the Air Force Academy. His service in the Turkish Air Forces began in 1970, where he served as a fighter pilot and later trained other aviators.

Koltuk's career took a significant turn in 1974 when he actively participated in the Cyprus Peace Operation, operating a North American F-100 Super Sabre supersonic jet. His bravery and skills as an aviator were recognised, making him a respected war veteran.

In 1987, at the age of 36, Koltuk was proudly selected as the test pilot for the first jets produced in Turkey. He performed the test flight of the first F-16 aircraft produced by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) on October 14, 1987, in Ankara. This marked a historic moment in Turkish aviation history.

After leaving the Turkish Air Forces in 1987, Koltuk continued his career as a test pilot for TAI, where he worked for 18 years. During this period, he completed the test flight of 521 aircraft and did a total of 1042 flights, all of which were successful.

Koltuk's contributions to Turkish aviation were substantial. He led test and operational flights during the F-16 introduction phase in Turkey, starting from the acquisition of the first F-16s in 1987. He also participated in the development and localization processes that helped Turkey produce F-16s domestically.

Moreover, Koltuk supported Turkish F-16 modernization programs that adapted the jets with indigenous AESA radars and electronic warfare suites (SPEWS-II). His efforts significantly enhanced Turkey's operational capacity in NATO and UN missions, including Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo starting in the early 1990s.

While the details of Colonel İsmail Hakkı Oğuz's career, the first Turkish test pilot for the F-16, are less widely documented, he is recognised for being a pioneer in integrating the F-16 into Turkish service, supporting indigenous upgrades and production under the Peace Onyx programs.

Sener Koltuk's life and career serve as a testament to his dedication and passion for aviation. His contributions to Turkish aviation will forever be remembered.
