Two Syrian men caught smuggling undeclared cigarettes near Koblenz
Two Syrian nationals were detained near Koblenz after customs officers uncovered a large stash of undeclared cigarettes in their car. The men, aged 22 and 38, were traveling from Brussels to Frankfurt when their vehicle was stopped for inspection on the A61 motorway. The incident took place on 9 February 2023 at around 9:00 p.m. Officers from the Koblenz Main Customs Office signaled for the car, bearing Swedish plates, to pull over. When questioned, the two Belgian residents—both Syrian citizens—failed to mention any goods they were transporting. The two men now face legal action over the alleged tax evasion. The cigarettes remain in custody, and the case will proceed through the appropriate channels. No further details on the investigation have been released at this time.
