U.S. Bishops Advance Jesuit Father Richard Thomas’ Path to Sainthood

The U.S. bishops have taken a significant step towards recognizing the holiness of Jesuit Father Richard Thomas. They overwhelmingly voted on November 11 to support his canonization process, marking a crucial moment in the cause that began in 2011, five years after his death.

Father Thomas, who died on May 8, 2006, in Las Cruces, New Mexico, dedicated his life to serving the poor. His cause for sainthood was initiated in 2011, with permission granted to publish devotional materials in 2012. The process gained momentum with the U.S. bishops' recent vote.

Bishop Thomas J. Paprocki of Springfield, Illinois, and Bishop Peter Baldacchino of Las Cruces, New Mexico, presented the agenda item for Father Thomas' canonization cause. This consultation is a necessary step before formally opening the canonization process. Pope Leo XIV's apostolic letter, 'Dilexi Te,' outlines the church's rationale for and record of service to the poor, reflecting Father Thomas' life and work.

Father Thomas' commitment to social work was rejuvenated after a personal Pentecost experience at a charismatic prayer service. He established a 'garbage dump ministry' that led to various social initiatives, including a food bank and clinics. His efforts expanded the work of Our Lady's Youth Center in El Paso, Texas, under the leadership of Bishop Ricardo Ramirez, who led the Diocese of Las Cruces before Father Thomas' death.

The U.S. bishops' vote signals strong support for Father Richard Thomas' canonization cause. His life of service to the poor, reflected in Pope Leo XIV's apostolic letter, has brought him one step closer to sainthood. The next stage in the process will involve formally opening his canonization cause.
