U.S. Bishops to Consecrate Nation to Sacred Heart of Jesus in Historic 2026 Ceremony

Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades of Fort Wayne-South Bend, Indiana, chairing the USCCB's Committee for Religious Liberty, has announced a significant event. In 2026, marking the U.S.'s 250th anniversary, the U.S. bishops will consecrate the nation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ. This act aims to promote devotion and remind everyone of the task to serve the nation with the spirit of the Gospel.

The consecration, to be held at the USCCB's spring assembly in June 2026, will conclude on the solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. This tradition dates back to at least the second century and was further emphasized by Pope Pius XI in 1925 when he instituted the feast of Christ the King. Pope Francis, in his encyclical 'Dilexit Nos', highlighted the devotion to the Sacred Heart as a symbol of love and unity.

In preparation for the consecration, dioceses are invited to organize 250 hours of adoration or 250 works of mercy. Prayer resources, including a novena, will also be developed to engage Catholics in the process. This initiative follows Pope Leo XIV's apostolic exhortation 'Dilexi Te', which encouraged the faithful to contemplate Christ's love and serve the world.

The consecration of the U.S. to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 2026 promises to be a significant moment of unity and devotion. Led by Bishop Kevin Rhoades, this event offers an opportunity for Catholics to reflect on their faith and recommit to serving their nation in the spirit of the Gospel.
