U.S. Deploys B-2 Bombers, Moves Them Towards the Middle East.
Stealth Bombers Headed to Diego Garcia Amid Tensions
The LowdownA group of stealth bombers, B-2A Spirits, took off from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, bound for Diego Garcia, a strategic U.S. military base in the Indian Ocean. British Defense Journal reports on the deployment.
The B-2As are accompanied by eight KC-135 Stratotanker refueling aircraft. These aircraft joined the bombers over Kansas, as the Pentagon sends military aircraft into the Israeli-Iranian conflict fray.
B-2A Spirits: A Brief Overview
Developed by Northrop Grumman (U.S.), the B-2 Spirit made its first flight in 1989. It can reach an altitude of 15,000 meters and carry a 18,000 kg payload. These bombers can carry both conventional and nuclear warheads and are manned by a crew of two.
The B-2 has been used in NATO allies' bombing campaigns in Yugoslavia, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Its stealth characteristics make it well-suited for operations in heavy anti-aircraft defense conditions.
B-2s: A Potential Threat to Iran
These bombers are capable of delivering heavy, precision-guided bombs, like the Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP), which can destroy deeply buried targets and fortified structures. With their unique capabilities, B-2s could potentially target inaccessible underground facilities such as Iran's nuclear site in Fordo, which houses a uranium enrichment plant.
Regional Actions and Tensions
Dozens of American aircraft, including fighters, tankers, and reconnaissance platforms, have been deployed to the region. Two U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and other naval and air forces are also operational in the area.
Israel initiated a military operation against Iran on June 13, citing Iran's progress towards acquiring nuclear weapons. Tehran denies these accusations and has launched retaliatory strikes.
Amid conflicting reports, some speculate that U.S. intervention in the conflict could result in "irreparable damage" for Tehran. In Moscow, the Kremlin dismissed media reports of U.S. plans to use tactical nuclear weapons against Iran, stating them as mere speculation.
While there is no recent information indicating a direct deployment of B-2As towards Diego Garcia amid the Israeli-Iranian conflict, it's important to remember historical deployments of these bombers to Diego Garcia for operations, including strikes against Houthi targets. The strategic location of Diego Garcia allows for operations without entering Iranian ally airspace, reducing risks. The B-2s serve a significant role in deterrence and potential strikes against deep targets. However, recent deployments to Guam suggest a focus on Pacific operations as well.
