U.S. imposes fresh North Korea sanctions amid rising tensions with Russia and China
The United States has imposed its first North Korea sanctions since Donald Trump’s second term began. These measures highlight Washington’s ongoing reliance on sanctions as a tool in denuclearisation talks. The move comes amid growing concerns over Pyongyang’s ties with Russia and China, which have weakened the impact of existing UN restrictions.
The new U.S. sanctions were introduced months after the UN Security Council tightened restrictions on North Korea in September 2017. Those measures followed Pyongyang’s missile tests and included American participation. However, this time, South Korea initially hesitated to join a joint announcement through the Multinational Sanctions Monitoring Team (MSMT), prompting the U.S. to act alone.
The U.S. has reaffirmed its commitment to sanctions as a diplomatic tool, despite challenges from North Korea’s partnerships with Russia and China. Seoul’s cautious approach and internal debates over policy adjustments have led to friction with Washington. Moving forward, closer coordination between the two allies will be critical in shaping their response to Pyongyang.
