Uber's stock soars to new heights following its deal with Joby Aviation and Blade Air Mobility.
In a significant stride towards the future of transportation, Joby Aviation, Blade Air Mobility, and Uber have formed a groundbreaking partnership. This alliance promises to redefine the way we travel, as these pioneering companies join forces to revolutionise urban air mobility.
Last year, Blade Air Mobility carried over 50,000 passengers, a testament to the growing demand for air travel solutions in urban environments. As part of this partnership, Uber will offer Blade flights through its app, although specific details regarding the immediate availability of these flights are yet to be disclosed.
The partnership between these three giants could set a standard for how urban air mobility integrates with everyday transportation. In many European cities, over one in every three miles travelled on Uber is now electric, indicating a shift towards more sustainable travel options.
Analysts predict that by the early 2030s, millions of passengers may fly on eVTOL (electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing) aircraft each year. The global Urban Air Mobility (UAM) market was about $5.4 billion in 2023, a figure expected to grow over 30% each year, reaching around $30 billion by 2030.
Uber's stock hitting a record high of approximately $98.85 on September 16, 2023, underscores the excitement surrounding this deal and the opportunities it presents. In the last year, Uber's share price rose by over 70%, reflecting the market's confidence in the company's vision.
Uber has also made significant strides in promoting sustainable practices. The company has more than 230,000 active zero-emission drivers globally as of Q1 2025, a 60% increase from the same period the previous year. In Q1 2025, drivers using zero-emission vehicles completed over 105 million emission-free trips globally, a 60% increase from the previous year.
By adding air mobility with Joby's eVTOLs, Uber estimates it can cut emissions per trip by 50% to 80% compared to helicopters. Uber has also committed $800 million through 2025 to support drivers switching to electric vehicles. As of the end of 2023, it had already allocated $439 million towards this initiative.
Looking ahead, by 2026, Uber users will be able to book Blade flights directly through the Uber app. Joby Aviation bought Blade's passenger business for up to $125 million. With top companies in advanced air mobility predicted to run fleets larger than today's biggest airlines by 2030, this partnership marks a monumental step in the evolving landscape of urban transportation.
