UK to deploy 61 upgraded M270 rocket launchers by 2029 in major fleet overhaul
The UK is expanding and modernising its rocket launcher fleet over the next five years. By 2029, the armed forces will operate 61 upgraded M270 Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS). The programme includes new vehicles, advanced munitions, and a full upgrade to the latest A2 standard.
The British Ministry of Defence currently runs 21 M270B1 launchers. Two of these have already been upgraded to the newer A2 model. Another 13 launchers, along with two Repair and Recovery Vehicles, are now in production and set for delivery in 2026.
The UK has also bought 11 additional M270A0 launchers from Norway. These will join the fleet as part of a wider upgrade plan. The entire fleet will be modernised in four stages, with all work expected to finish by 2029.
New Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) munitions will start arriving in the second quarter of 2026. A further batch of Extended Range GMLRS rockets is scheduled for 2028. These upgrades will increase the fleet's firepower and operational range.
Once complete, the programme will give the UK a total of 61 upgraded M270 MLRS launchers. The final deliveries are due by 2029, ensuring the fleet meets modern battlefield news requirements. The new rockets and vehicles will provide enhanced long-range strike capabilities for British forces.
