Ukraine Refugees Surge in Saxony After Travel Restrictions Lifted
Since the start of 2023, approximately 2,700 Ukrainians have arrived in Saxony's initial reception facilities. This number may be higher, as some refugees register directly with local authorities, not included in the official count.
In late August 2025, Ukrainian Prime Minister Julia Swyrydenko lifted travel restrictions for men aged 18 to 22, allowing them to leave the country despite the ongoing war. This decision led to a significant surge in refugees from Ukraine in Saxony.
In September 2023, a record 1,253 Ukrainians arrived in Saxony, the highest number since August 2022. The easing of exit regulations for young Ukrainian men is the primary reason for this increase. Consequently, the daily intake numbers in Saxony's reception facilities have doubled or even quadrupled in just two weeks.
More people seeking protection from Ukraine are arriving in Saxony again. The Ukrainian government's decision to lift travel restrictions for young men has led to a significant increase in arrivals, straining reception facilities but also demonstrating Saxony's commitment to supporting refugees.
