Death of a Homeless Man - Defendant Denies Allegations - Ukrainian man denies murder in trial over homeless victim’s death
A 46-year-old Ukrainian national, holding a Greek passport, is currently on trial for a joint murder charge. The alleged accomplice, however, took his own life while in pretrial detention, leaving the defendant to stand alone in the dock.
The trial centres around the death of a homeless man in Neuss. The defendant denies any involvement in the victim's death. Instead, he claims that a dispute over tent location between the victim and another man escalated, leading to the victim's injuries.
The defendant testified that he found the victim lifeless in his tent the next day, after helping him following an altercation near the Rhine riverbank. The prosecution, however, alleges that the defendant and the now-deceased 39-year-old man brutally attacked the victim together, with the 39-year-old initially assaulting him.
The trial continues with the defendant maintaining his innocence. The absence of the alleged accomplice, who died by suicide, leaves the defendant as the sole person facing charges. The outcome of the trial remains uncertain.
