Ulyanovsk Oblast restricts mobile internet to protect key infrastructure from drones

Ulyanovsk Oblast has implemented partial mobile internet restrictions, aiming to safeguard critical infrastructure from potential drone threats. Despite the limitations, residents can still access essential services and popular platforms.

The move by Ulyanovsk Oblast marks the first official announcement of such restrictions in Russia. While similar measures might already be in place elsewhere, this is the first region to confirm the implementation. The restrictions target areas near special-purpose facilities and will remain active until the completion of the ongoing special military operation.

The regional authorities have established a 'whitelist' of websites and applications that will continue functioning. This includes social media platforms, banking services, and marketplaces, ensuring residents can maintain access to crucial digital services. Despite the partial shutdowns, residents can still utilise Wi-Fi, taxis, digital payments, and other services, minimising disruption to daily life.

Ulyanovsk Oblast's partial mobile internet restrictions, designed to enhance security, have been implemented with minimal impact on residents' daily activities. The region's proactive approach to protecting critical infrastructure serves as a precedent for other areas considering similar measures.
