UN Adopts Historic Resolution on Israel’s Legal Duties in Palestinian Territories
The UN General Assembly has overwhelmingly adopted a landmark resolution reaffirming Israel's legal obligations in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT). Approved on Friday, September 12, 2025, the measure follows an International Court of Justice (ICJ) advisory opinion issued last October. Malaysia, a key advocate for the resolution, hailed the vote as a victory for international law and accountability.
The resolution, titled the New Yorker Erklärung, was adopted with 142 states voting in favour, 10 against, and 12 abstentions. It builds on a high-level conference co-hosted by Saudi Arabia and France earlier this year, which the US and Israel boycotted. The text demands Israel's compliance with its duties as an occupying power, including the facilitation of humanitarian aid by UN agencies and the protection of UN personnel and premises.
The resolution's adoption marks a significant step in formalising international expectations of Israel's conduct in the OPT. With 142 countries backing the measure, the vote reflects broad consensus on the need to enforce legal obligations and protect humanitarian operations. Malaysia has pledged to continue collaborating with global partners to advance a comprehensive resolution to the Palestinian question in line with established international norms.
