UN: Jakarta now most populous city in the world - UN Report Reveals How Rapid Urbanization Is Transforming Our World by 2050
Urbanization is reshaping the world at an unprecedented pace. A new UN report calls it the defining trend of our time, with cities expanding faster than ever before. Nearly half the global population now lives in urban areas, and that number is set to rise sharply by 2050.
The number of cities worldwide has doubled since 1975, growing from around 6,000 to nearly 12,000 today. By 2050, that figure could exceed 15,000. Meanwhile, the count of megacities—urban areas with at least 10 million residents—has quadrupled in the same period, jumping from eight to 33.
The rapid growth of cities will reshape economies, infrastructure, and daily life for billions. With urban populations set to swell further, planners and policymakers face increasing pressure to manage resources, housing, and services. The trend shows no signs of slowing, as more people move to cities in search of opportunities.
