Unearthing Eduard Petersilie: Fact and Fiction in Nazi-Era Osnabrück
Literary scholar Martina Sellmeyer will delve into the intriguing figure of Eduard Petersilie at a lecture on October 16, 2023. Known for his association with the Nazi era and his connection to the 'Germania' hotel in Osnabrück, Petersilie's life and legacy have been the subject of both fiction and historical record.
In his 1956 novel 'The Black Obelisk', Erich Maria Remarque fictionalised Petersilie as Eduard Knobloch, poking fun at his literary ambitions. However, Petersilie's real-life story is no less fascinating. As the owner of the 'Germania' hotel, he hosted Adolf Hitler during his visits to Osnabrück in 1925 and 1932. The hotel became a hub for local Nazi bigwigs during the regime.
Despite rumours, there is no confirmed record of Petersilie receiving the Federal Cross of Merit. After the war, Petersilie continued to wear his Golden Nazi Party badge, a controversial decision that has drawn attention to his role in the era.
Join Martina Sellmeyer's lecture at the Erich Maria Remarque Peace Center to explore the life of Eduard Petersilie, from his fictionalised portrayal to his historical significance. The event promises to shed light on a complex figure whose story transcends fiction and reality.
